SHAVINGS
Because the sawdust markets in the
Northeast are in such a state of flux due to the high demand for wood pellets
and particle board, and the great uncertainty in the lumber sawmill business, Tamarack
Hill Trucking is now manufacturing its own BULK pine/softwood shavings right
here in South New Berlin, NY. Deliveries come in 25 cubic yard loads. All loads
are delivered on our 10 wheel dump shown on the home page and below on this
page.
This product IS NOT kiln dried but it is not
dusty either. It is composed of a mixture of air dried and green softwood logs.
The milling process produces mostly curly shavings but also makes a certain
amount of regular sawdust millings which are mixed right in. This helps with
absorbency.
Species such as spruce, hemlock, white pine,
red pine, basswood, larch and poplar give the product a wonderful pine smell.
This produces a product low in dust while still having excellent absorbency
qualities and great “shakeout” properties for horse stables. Prices are roughly
HALF of regular bagged – type shavings (on a bulk basis) offering the farmer a
considerable savings over the bagged product.

14 cubic yard shaving mill.
Logs are loaded into a box which then goes back and forth over a cutter head
with ten, 10 inch knives. Logs can be up to 8 feet long and 20 inches in
diameter. The shavings are then blown directly into the truck. The mill is
operated with a 46 H.P. Kubota diesel engine. A real simple
process that produces an extraordinary product for horses, cows, calves,
heifers and any other class of livestock.
Shavings are composed of various ratios of
red pine, spruce, basswood, white pine, larch, and poplar. They are not kiln
dried but they have very good absorbency qualities and are low in dust.
