Hardwood Sawdust – 30 cubic Yards

SAWDUST GRADES, AVAILABILITY, PRICING, & COMMENTS

 1. Hardwood/Softwood :  This is the most popular type of sawdust that we carry. Most is fine textured (except for one mill which grinds up their slab wood into the mix) and dry (in the sense that it is stored under cover prior to loading). This type is all debarked before sawing. A typical 30 to 32 cubic yard load weighs anywhere from 8 to 10 tons and has a moisture content of between 30 to 50 percent. It is moderately “dusty”.

The most prevalent species of wood sawn are hard maple, soft maple, ash, basswood, birch, beech, cherry, red oak and white oak. Not many of the mills we go to saw softwood species such as red, white or hard pine, but it does occur from time to time.

For deliveries, allow a one to two week lead time, much more between November 1 to February 7. Sometimes all we can do during this time period is put you on a waiting list. As always it is advisable to go onto a standing delivery schedule, but even this is not a guarantee of delivery during the winter months. Another suggestion would be to stock up on your winter needs during the spring and summer months when demand falls off and supply goes up.

 2. Double Ground Wood / Sawdust :  This sawdust comes from a recycled pallet manufacturer. This mill grinds their waste wood into a dry but coarse bedding material. It is composed of about 70 percent hardwood and 30 percent softwood. It has a nice pine smell to it.

Load size is 32 cubic yards

Just like regular sawdust, availability is touch and go…better in late spring and summer, hard to get in the winter months.

3. Sand : We do have  wash sand bedding. It is fine in texture with no stones or clay and will not pack in stalls. It is fairly wet when delivered and black in color but dries when spread out to a medium gray color. Sand is available April through November. This material will freeze up if stored outside in the winter. Local deliveries only.
A typical 10 cubic yard load weighs 15 tons.

4. Softwood/Pine Shavings: see link to left.

Besides ordering early and going onto standing deliveries, it is best not to limit us as to what species we can  and/or not bring…….. This will only result in interruptions in deliveries. However, if you do not want a particular species, we will try our hardest to get an acceptable load.

Stay stocked up on sawdust. The service which we provide to farmers does not operate very well on a “just in time” delivery schedule. There are just too many things that can go wrong in this business such as weather, breakdowns, slowdowns, holidays, vacations, and of course the ever present supply and demand. Try to keep 10 to 20 percent of your annual needs of sawdust in reserve. For instance, if you anticipate using a load every two weeks or 25 loads per year, try to have a stockpile of 2 to 5 loads in reserve. This is much recommended during the winter months. A good time to get stocked up for this period is in the late spring to early fall.

We need lots of room to dump our trucks. Try to pick a spot that is level, open and free of overhead lines. We do not back into two story barns and dump inside on barn floors.
